A cami has thin straps and was cut to sit under something. A tank has a wider strap and enough structure to wear on its own. These days both get worn either way. Ours run lace, ribbed, low back and muscle fits from Free People and the Miss Behavin' Label.

▾ Cami or tank: which one do you actually want?
Buy on strap width, not on the name. Thin straps and a lower neckline read dressier and sit better under an open shirt or a blazer. A wider strap and a higher neck stands alone with jeans and needs nothing over it. Lace and ribbed trims push a cami toward evening; a muscle fit pulls a tank toward daytime. If you want one piece that does both, take a low back in a plain fabric.
▾ What do you wear them with?
Denim is the default and it never misses. A muscle fit with baggy jeans reads relaxed. A lace cami with a mini or a skort reads like you tried. Layer either one under an open shirt when the evening turns. Sizes vary by label, so check the options on each product page. The jeans and tees that go with them are gathered in everyday outfits.
Camis and tanks sit in Tops alongside Sweaters. The Miss Behavin' Label is our own line and the one nobody else carries.
