Denim first, always. Wide leg or straight rather than skinny, because it has to move with boots underneath it. Boots second, and they need to be a pair you would rewear to a barbecue or on a Tuesday, not a costume pair bought for one night. The third piece is whatever earns its keep on top: a fitted corset top under an open shirt, a tartan or printed blouse, or a printed mini dress if you would rather skip the top and bottom maths entirely. What it is not: fringe head to toe, a plastic hat, or anything that reads more Halloween than Nashville.

A festival outfit leans boho or statement, with one loud piece the whole look is built around. A country concert outfit leans wearable: the boots and the denim do the work, and the top is the one piece you actually dressed up. Skip the maths. A printed mini dress and boots. One decision, and it photographs better than separates.

Layered for a night that gets cold. Denim, a tank, an open shirt over the top, boots. The shirt comes off at nine and goes back on at eleven.

Denim shorts, if it is hot. Shorts, a fitted top, and taller boots so the proportion still reads western rather than summer.

Buy the pair you would wear again in a month, not the loudest pair on the shelf. A shorter western boot with a low stacked heel goes with denim, a mini and a dress, which is three outfits from one purchase. Taller shafts look better with shorts and minis than with a wide leg jean, because the jean covers what you paid for. Break them in before the show. Most of these shows start in daylight and end well after dark, and the difference is bigger than people plan for. Denim handles both, which is the main argument for it over a skirt. If the afternoon is hot, go shorts or a mini and carry the layer rather than wearing it. If the venue is outdoors and it drops after sunset, an open shirt or a light jacket over what you already have is enough, and it doubles as somewhere to put your phone.

Anything that only works for one night. Full fringe, a novelty hat, brand new boots, and heels that sink into grass. The test is whether you would put the piece on again in a normal week.
