What to wear to graduation comes down to what sits well under a gown and still works when you take it off. A short dress in white or a light color is the standard, with a shoe you can walk across grass in. Brands we carry include Free People, Motel Rocks and Lucy In The Sky, alongside our own Miss Behavin' Label. Sizes vary by label.

▾ What do you wear under a graduation gown?
Something short, light and simple. The gown covers most of it, so the parts that show are the hem, the neckline and the shoes, and those are the three things worth choosing carefully. A short dress works better than a long one because a maxi hem under a gown reads messy in photos. Light fabrics matter more than you would think: a gown is a second layer, the ceremony is usually long, and it is often warm. Keep the neckline clean so the stole or the cords sit flat rather than fighting a collar.
▾ Should you wear white to graduation?
Usually yes, and this is the one occasion where white is the convention rather than the mistake. Many schools ask for white or a light color under the gown, and plenty specify it outright, so check your school's guidance before you buy anything. Where there is no rule, white still photographs well against almost every gown color. If white is not for you, a soft neutral or a light pastel does the same job. The thing to avoid is a print bold enough to read through a thin gown.
▾ What shoes work for a graduation ceremony?
A block heel or a flat, and think about the ground before the outfit. Most ceremonies involve grass, a long walk from parking, stairs onto a stage and a lot of standing, and a stiletto loses every one of those. A block heel gives height without sinking. A heeled sandal works indoors. A flat is never the wrong answer, particularly if you are crossing a field. Whatever you pick, wear it in beforehand, because the day involves more walking than anyone plans for. Shoes live in Shoes.
▾ What do you wear to the dinner afterwards?
This is where the outfit gets to be the outfit. The gown comes off, the photos move indoors, and what you wore underneath is suddenly the whole look, so buy for the dinner and let it work for the ceremony rather than the other way round. A short dress that reads dressy on its own is the efficient answer. If you would rather have two looks, keep the ceremony piece simple and bring a jacket or a going out top to change into. Either way you are wearing it for eight hours, so comfort is not a compromise.
▾ Three graduation outfits we would actually wear
The classic one. A white or ivory short dress, a block heel, gold jewelry. Works under any gown color, photographs cleanly, and goes straight to dinner.
The one that is not white. A light pastel or a soft neutral mini, a heeled sandal, minimal jewelry. Same effect if white is not your color, and easier to rewear.
The one that is not a dress. A skirt with a fitted or corset top, a flat or a low heel. Sits well under a gown, and the two pieces separate into two more outfits afterwards.
▾ What should you not wear to graduation?
Anything you have to manage. A strapless that needs adjusting while you are holding a diploma, a hem you have to watch on stairs, a heel you cannot walk on grass in. Skip heavy fabrics, because a gown over a thick dress in a warm hall is genuinely uncomfortable for two hours. Skip anything so long it shows below the gown. And skip a brand new shoe, which is the single most common regret of the day.
▾ How is graduation different from other school occasions?
It is the one where you are photographed the most and dancing the least. Prom and winter formal are evening events where the dress is the point; graduation is a daytime ceremony where the dress spends two hours hidden and then has to carry a dinner. That flips the priorities toward comfort, a clean neckline and a shoe built for walking. It also means the money goes further on something you will wear again, rather than a one night dress. For the evening versions, see prom outfit ideas and Winter Formal Dresses.
▾ What to know before you order
Order early enough to try it under the gown, because the gown is the variable you cannot judge online. Sizes vary by label, so check the options on each product page. White and light fabrics can be sheer, so check the lining note and hold it up to the light when it arrives. If you are between sizes, message us and we will pull it off the rack and tell you what we see.
