A Coachella outfit has to survive three things: sun for eight hours, a real temperature drop after dark, and a lot of walking on uneven ground. That rules out most of what gets posted. What actually works is a light layer you can move in, one piece with texture doing the visual work, and a shoe you would wear on a normal day. Everything else is styling.

Dress for a long day outdoors first and for the photos second, because the day is long and the photos take a minute. In practice that means breathable fabric, a cut that does not need adjusting when you move, and something in your bag for after sunset. Texture carries the look better than skin does: crochet, fringe, eyelet, mesh and anything with movement reads festival on camera and still works when you are sitting on grass three hours later. ▾ What is the 3-3-3 rule for outfits?
The 3-3-3 rule is a packing method: three tops, three bottoms and three pairs of shoes, chosen so that every top works with every bottom. Nine pieces, and the combinations cover a long weekend without a second bag. It is the most useful thing you can apply to a festival, because it forces you to buy pieces that mix rather than one outfit per day that only works once. Pick a single colour family and the rule does the rest of the work for you.
▾ What do most people actually wear?
Far less than the feed suggests. The crowd runs to denim shorts or a mini, a top with some texture to it, and boots or a flat sandal. The elaborate looks belong to a small number of people being photographed on purpose. If you turn up in a good pair of shorts and a crochet or mesh top you will look like you belong, which is the actual goal. Save the statement piece for one day rather than three.
▾ What the desert does to an outfit
Two things, and both catch people out. The sun is direct and there is very little shade, so anything tight and synthetic becomes uncomfortable by the middle of the afternoon. Then the temperature drops hard once it is dark, and the sets you came for are the late ones. A layer worn open over the top, an oversized shirt, a light jacket, a knit, solves the second problem without hiding the outfit underneath. Dust handles the rest of the decision: pale suede and anything you would be upset to ruin should stay home.

Day one, the long one. Denim shorts, a crochet or eyelet top, boots, and a shirt tied at the waist for later. You will be on your feet longest on the first day and you have not learned the site yet.
Day two, the one that gets photographed. A mini dress with texture or a set, worn with the same boots. One decision instead of three, and it holds up in every photo without needing a rethink.
Day three, the one nobody plans for. Whatever is still clean. A slip or a simple dress with a jacket over it, or the day one shorts with the day two top. This is exactly what the 3-3-3 rule is protecting you from.
▾ Coachella, a country concert and a general festival are not the same.
A country show is denim and boots with one polished piece on top, and the boots are the point. A general festival leans on one loud item that the whole look is built around. Coachella sits between them and adds heat: the texture does the work, the layer is not optional, and nothing should need adjusting. ▾ Shoes, and the only rule that matters
You will walk further than you think, on grass, gravel and sand. Buy the pair you would wear on a normal Saturday. A western boot handles all three surfaces, hides dust, and reads right with everything above. A flat sandal works for the heat and stops working the moment the ground does. Anything bought for one weekend that you would not wear again, because that is the whole cost of the outfit and none of the value. Full costume, including headdresses, which have been out of favour for years and for good reason. White anything, on a dust field. Shoes straight out of the box. And a bag too small to hold water, which is the single most common mistake and the one you notice by two in the afternoon.
