Does Free People run big?

Yes, mostly. Tops, dresses and sweaters run large, and one size down is the usual fix. Denim is where that rule falls apart: it changes by style, not by brand, so some cuts run two sizes big and others run small. And the fitted pieces are their own story. Size the style, not the label.

How do Free People dresses and tops fit?

Big. Take one size down and you will be right most of the time.

This is not a mistake on their end, it is the whole design language. Free People builds on a relaxed, billowy line, so the garment is meant to float instead of hug. Order your usual size expecting something fitted and it shows up feeling like it belongs to someone taller than you.

The catch is that you only notice on certain shapes. On a tiered dress or an oversized knit, the extra room reads as the point. On a slip dress or anything fitted through the bodice, the same extra room reads as a mistake, and that is the order people regret. Sweaters and knitwear are the most oversized things they make, so if you were only going to size down on one category, make it that one.

Two things worth knowing before you check out. The range runs XXS to XL, or 00 to 16, and there are no half sizes, so every move is a full step. And the top of the range is cut generously: a reviewer who wears an 18 to 20 fit into XL in almost everything she tried on.

What actually runs true to size at Free People?

This is the half of the answer nobody publishes, and it is the half that costs people money.

The size down rule applies to the loose things. It does not reach the fitted ones. In our fitting room, Free People bodysuits run true to size and so do the cropped and fitted tops. We fit customers in Free People every week, and this is the correction we make most often: someone has read that the brand runs big, ordered down out of habit, and ended up with a bodysuit they cannot wear.

So the rule is not one size down across the board. It is one size down on anything relaxed, oversized, slouchy or knit, and your true size on anything cut close to the body.

How does Free People denim fit?

Differently every time, and this is the part most sizing guides quietly skip.

Free People denim does not have a brand fit. It has a style fit, and the spread is wide enough that following a one line rule will send you the wrong direction roughly half the time. Two independent try-ons make the case better than any general claim could.

A reviewer at 5'6" worked through ten pairs. Osaka ran big enough to drop one to two sizes. Palmer and Moxie ran large. Lotus and Tinsley ran small. Waterfalls, Old West and Risk Taker came in true. A second reviewer at 5'0" who usually wears a 25 found the same pattern on a completely different set: size down in Deep Trance, Good Luck and Zane, size up in Slim Shade Selvedge and Aster Straight, take your usual in Winward.

Two people at opposite ends of the height range, no overlap in the pairs, same conclusion. Rise, leg shape and fabric weight decide it. A rigid high rise barrel and a soft mid rise straight are not going to behave the same at the same number, and the number on the tag is not going to warn you.

So: read the cut, then pick the size. And read the product reviews on the piece you want, because that is where the outliers get flagged first.

Does We The Free size differently?

We The Free is Free People's in house heritage line, mostly denim and worn-in basics, and it is generally described as sitting closer to true than the main line. That tracks with the look, which is built on a straighter, sturdier cut rather than the floaty one.

Take it as a starting point, not a rule. The same per pair evidence above is We The Free denim, and it splits exactly the same way, so the line is not systematically anything. It is not the opposite of Free People, and there is nothing published anywhere supporting the idea that it runs small.

So what is the actual rule?

Most guides stop at "runs big," which is the part everyone already knows and the reason people still order wrong. The more useful version is that Free People is consistent by silhouette, not by brand.

Anything relaxed, oversized, slouchy or knit: size down, confidently. Anything fitted, structured or cut close to the body, including bodysuits and cropped tops: take your true size. And denim gets treated as its own category with its own answer per style, every time.

One sentence version: size down on the loose things, stay true on the fitted things, look up the denim.
